EMDR and addictions treatment go together like a hand and glove.I say this because I don’t think I’ve ever had a client with a substance use issue that did not have a trauma history of some kind. Ever.
And the best way to treat trauma is with EMDR.
I also use EMDR to help clients manage their addictive behavior in all sorts of ways. For instance, let’s look at the triggers that cause so many problems. My clients tell me that EMDR helps to lessen the grip triggers have on them and this results in less use.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying EMDR “cures” addictive behaviors. What I am saying is that I have found EMDR to be a very useful and rational approach in what I think of as my toolbox of choices for helping people overcome substance use issues.
